Announcement of the Gospel (Mt 11,2-11)
At that time, John was in prison. When he heard of the works of Christ, he sent some disciples to him, asking him, "Are you the one who is to come or should we expect another?"Jesus answered them, "Go and tell John what you are hearing and seeing: the blind see you, the paralytics walk, the lepers are healed, the deaf hear, the dead rise and the poor are preached. Happy is he who does not scandalize because of me! "
John's disciples left, and Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: "What did you see in the wilderness? A reed shaken by the wind? What did you see? A man dressed in fine clothes? But those who wear fine clothes are in the kings' palaces.
So, what did you go to see? A Prophet? Yes, I assert you, and someone who is more than a prophet. It is from him that it is written, 'Behold, I send my messenger before thee; He will prepare your way before you. ' Verily I say unto you, of all men that are born, no man is greater than John the Baptist. However, the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. "
A. BIGCUORE`S REFLECTION: This Sunday, the Church celebrates the 3rd Sunday of Advent. The Gospel of Matthew, chapter 11, verses 2 to 11.
After giving instructions to his disciples, Jesus goes out to preach in the neighborhood. To the guise of illustration, it should be noted that John the Baptist preached a baptism of conversion and he was aware that Jesus was the one sent by God to baptize in the fire of the Holy Spirit.
And John the Baptist sends some of his disciples to ask the Master Jesus, whether He really was the Christ, or should expect some other. To which the Master tells them, "Go and tell John. The blind see, the deaf hear, the paralyzed walk, the dead rise and the poor are preached.Jesus, on the other hand, praises John the Baptist, saying that "among the born of a woman no one was greater than John."
John the Baptist, was the last Prophet of the Old Testament. After Him comes Jesus inaugurates the NEW ETERNAL ALLIANCE, sealed in His blood on the Cross!The Jews, unfortunately in the time of Jesus, understood nothing! They await a Messiah, wrapped in gold, born in Royal Palace, with all pomp. And, He is born in a manger with animals, for there was no room for him in the inns.
Every Old Testament was fulfilled in the New Testament inaugurated by Jesus. All that was said by the prophets, especially Isaiah, was fulfilled concerning the Messiah who was to come.Israel expected a God to free him from the yoke of the Romans. But not! Jesus says, "My Kingdom is not this world"!
The Sanhedrin, the elite of Israel, does not accept him as Messiah and ends, for fear that Jesus robbed them of the privileges in the Temple, and decides to kill him. And so it was done!On December 31, we make MEMORY of the Child God !. In fact, God IS ETERNALLY PRESENT !!! God is.!!!
In any case, all Christians must prepare to RENEW their faith, hope and charity that comes from the birth of the Child God. It is time for humanity to CONFRATERNIZE and think about WORLD PEACE and work for a new world, full of SOCIAL JUSTICE, of love and solidarity! Amen!!!
